[Release] Danganronpa English Translation v1.0

At long last, the translation patch is here!

First of all, if you don’t have a copy of the game, check this post out for everything you need to know before you get the patch.

NOTE: the patch only works with the PSP The Best edition of the game.

Enjoy!

Compatibility

Custom Firmwares

If you need help installing a custom firmware, use this tutorial.

Common Issues and Solutions

Check this post.

Emulators

  • JPCSP: mostly compatible with the patch, but it has its share of problems, and it suffers from considerable slowdown–especially in 3D sections.
  • PPSSPP: fixes for the major bugs have made it into the stable builds of the emulator as of v0.9, so just download the most recent stable version.
    • Go to Options -> Rendering Mode and select “Read Framebuffers to Memory(CPU)”.

☨ “No Movies” just means the patch doesn’t alter the movies already present in the game (except for one tiny clip necessary to the story). It does not mean the game has no movies at all.

Applying the patch

Windows

  1. Copy the Danganronpa ISO to same folder as the patch files (or the other way around).
  2. Rename the ISO "Danganronpa.iso"
    • If file extensions are set to hidden, you might need to name it plain "Danganronpa" without the ".iso" part, since it should already have the proper extension.
  3. Double-click on "apply_patch.bat" and wait for it to finish. This can take several minutes to complete.
  4. It should output either "Danganronpa [EN][v1.0][Full].iso" (1.24 GB) or "Danganronpa [EN][v1.0][No Movies].iso" (1.20 GB) depending on which version of the patch you have.
  5. If you want, you can now verify your patched ISO against the hashes listed in the next section.
  6. Put the patched ISO in a folder named “ISO” on the root of your PSP’s Memory Stick.

Windows (GUI Patcher, Courtesy of cixota)

  1. Download and extract http://thejbnet.com/progs/xgui/app/xdeltagui.zip
  2. Launch xdeltagui.exe
  3. Go to Settings -> Paths, and browse to the “xdelta3-3.0.6-win32.exe” included with the patch.
  4. Original file = original ISO file, and patch = .xdelta file. (The GUI might be unresponsive when you select the ISO file and when you patch the file).
  5. Put the patched ISO in a folder named “ISO” on the root of your PSP’s Memory Stick.

Mac (Courtesy of Klee)

To patch xdelta files, you’ll have to download the xdelta program, which can be used through the Mac’s Terminal program (the equivalent of Window’s Command Prompt).

  1. Install Homebrew from http://mxcl.github.io/homebrew/
  2. Open Terminal and type “brew install xdelta”.
    • You may need to download Xcode for Homebrew to work, which is on the Mac OS install disc. If you can’t find it, you can also download the program from the Apple site.
    • Make sure you have the proper version of Xcode for your Mac OS! You can go to https://developer.apple.com/downloads/ and type in Xcode in the search box to the left, and then look for the right version.
  3. Put the original ISO (the Danganronpa game file) and patch files (the xdelta file downloaded from Project Zetsubou) into the same folder. In this example, the folder will be called “Patcher.”
  4. Navigate to that folder in Terminal using the cd command. The easiest way is to type cd, enter a space, and then drag the folder into the Terminal.
    • Format: cd (folder)
    • Example: cd /Users/Klee/Desktop/Patcher
  5. Type in the patch command into Terminal.
    • Format: xdelta3 -d -s "base" xdelta file source "location"
    • The “base” is the name of the original Danganronpa game file, while the “xdelta file source” is the name of the xdelta patch download. The location is whatever you want to name the finished, patched game file.
    • Example: xdelta3 -d -s "Danganronpa.iso" danganronpa-1.0-full.xdelta "Danganronpa [EN][v1.0][Full].iso"
    • If successful, a second game file should be created.
  6. The patch process does take a little while, and unfortunately Terminal doesn’t let you know when it finishes in an obvious manner. The easiest way to make sure is to check the file size of the game file (right-click, Get Info). It should stop increasing at around 1.24 GB for the full patch and 1.20 GB for the no-movies version.
  7. Put the patched ISO in a folder named “ISO” on the root of your PSP’s Memory Stick.

Linux (Courtesy of Jen)

What you’ll want to do first, though is go into your terminal, and type in “sudo apt-get install xdelta3” (without quotes), then, when prompted, give it the okay with your administrative password – this will install xdelta3 without you needing to do anything else. Then, follow the rest of Klee’s command-line instructions. Also, any command-line folks that are having issues: check your quote placement and make sure that it’s exactly the same as Klee’s! That will always make the patch fail. Finally: put the patched ISO in a folder named “ISO” on the root of your PSP’s Memory Stick.

If you don’t mind me asking, why is the patched copy of the ISO so much smaller than the unpatched? The ISO is something like 1.6 GB unpatched but goes down to 1.24 or so. Did you guys just compress the hell out of things?

    Reply
    • We got rid of the install data and firmware update, since they’re not necessary with the game on your memory stick and your PSP on CFW.

Thank you so much for the effort you into this! I purchased the game a long time ago and now I’m finally able to understand it! ^o^ I played the demo and it worked just fine. Now I patched the ISO from my Dangonronpa (PSP The Best) and when I start the game I see the spike logo, a black screen follows and then my PSP turns itself off. Do you have any idea what I do wrong?
    Ah I have the CFW 6.60 PRO-B10.

My patch came out around ~200MB… is that the size it’s supposed to be? The ISO from my disc came out around 1.2GB I believe, so it’s kinda odd? …But I don’t exactly have a lot of experience with Windows computers so I think I’ve might of patched it wrong. Um I tested it on my PSP as well and it just gave me a black screen after the opening logos and didn’t even give me a title, aha.

      Reply
      • The original ISO should be 1.67 GB, and the output should be 1.20~1.24 GB, depending on which version of the patch you got.

Hi, I’m the hacker behind this project, and I’m trying to understand this bug.

      1) Which patch did you get? (Full or No-movie)
      2) What’s your PSP Model? (1000, 2000, 3000, Go)
      3) Do you have any CFW plugins?
      4) Did you change any other CFW settings?

Sorry for all of these questions, but I want to know what’s different about your PSP so I can turn my PSP into that and find the bug. Thanks.

      Reply
      • Same here…

        1. I try the No-movie cuz it’s smaller
        2. My PSP is PSP-3000
        3. No, I’m sure of it
        4. No, and very very sure

      • And Btw, my CFW is 6.60 Pro-C2

      • Judalice

         /  2013/06/26

        I’ve the same problem here…
The SPIKE logo appear, a black screen and then the PSP turn itself off…

-I’ve tried both the patch to see if one of them would work, and nope, same problem with full and no video…
        -My PSP is the 3004…
        -Nope, I’m using the 6.60 PRO-B10 and I have change nothing…

Also, in my case the full patch is 507.904 KB and the one with no sub in the movie is 458.752 KB that is not what you said it would be its size XD

      • Looking at those file sizes, my guess is that either xdelta ran into an error trying to patch the game or you didn’t give it a chance to finish. Those ISOs are just large enough to contain the EBOOT and the movies (which is what the Spike logo is), but not the bulk of the game’s data. So it’s got enough to start up, but once it tries to go past the logo, the data isn’t there and it crashes.

      • But in my case, it’s 1,24 GB for Full Patch and 1,20 GB for the No Movie version.

      • Wait, it’s 1,26 GB for No-Movie and 1,3 GB for Full version.

i am having absolutely no luck getting the mac patch to work and i have very little experience with terminal so i have no idea what to do or how to fix it. i keep geting and error saying that there are too many filenames and a second game file has never been created at all. can someone make a video guide for the mac installation?

    Reply
    • I’ll try and make a video guide, but I don’t have any experience with it so that may take a while/not work out at all, sorry.

Are there any specific steps you’re having issues with?

      Reply
    • The biggest thing to make sure of with the command line is making sure you’re typing the commands exactly – don’t copy and paste them. Doing the patch in a single folder on your desktop (with backups of the files elsewhere, just in case) will make this a lot easier. Also, be sure to doublecheck your quote placement in the last step; if there’s a quote out of place, the second file won’t get created at all.

I don’t have the capability to make a video guide, but those two things are the trickiest ones with the command line.

I also encountered the same issue. I managed to resolve this by unchecking the “Only GE graphics” and “Enable saving GE screen to Textures instead of memory” options. You can find them by going to Options>Configuration and then going to the video tab.

    • Yeah, unfortunately, seems like emulation is sorta broken at the moment. Not sure if there’s anything we can do on this side – probably best off talking with the JPCSP and PPSSPP devs and see if they can figure out a solution.

Or, of course, using a PSP!

  27. Thank you so much for all your hard work! It’s very much appreciated.

Question to all of you, though: I’m running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. Will the command-line instructions for the patch for Mac OS X work for Linux with a different package manager? If not, no big, there’s a Mac in the house I can use, but I’d rather not borrow the Mac and install software if I don’t have to. Thanks!

    Reply
    • Also, just to clarify a bit – I’m asking because we’re a Mac/Linux-only household and I don’t actually have access to a Windows machine to run Xdelta on.

      Reply
      • I would assume it’s the same, yes, so give it a shot! Most of the xdelta3 commands are pretty standard, and Mac/Linux especially are 99% identical with command lines.

And if it doesn’t work, then switch to the Mac? Uninstallation is pretty easy, if you’re worried about leaving the programs.

  29. I can’t seem to comment back to Klee directly, so I wanted to follow up – the patch is working great on Ubuntu (and I assume it will then work on any flavor of Linux) with the command line instructions!

What you’ll want to do first, though is go into your terminal, and type in ‘sudo apt-get install xdelta3′, then, when prompted, give it the okay with your administrative password – this will install xdelta3 without you needing to do anything else. Then, follow the rest of Klee’s command-line instructions.

Thanks a bunch, Klee! Now the only thing that will make me despair is Monobear himself.

    Reply
    • Blasted quotes are making me DESPAIR – the command is ‘sudo apt-get install xdelta3′. Ignore the quotes, Ubuntu users – they’ll throw an error. Also, any command-line folks that are having issues: check your quote placement and make sure that it’s exactly the same as Klee’s! That will always make the patch fail.

      Reply
      • Awesome, great to hear it worked out! :D

For Mac users though, unfortunately you can only download xdelta with the far more complicated steps I wrote up above, rather than the much quicker sudo apt-get method. The Mac is sort of annoying for this kind of thing!

Thank you all though i’m so excited! I just wish I could get it working!

    Reply
    • Hmm. Looks like it’s trying to run from system32, and not wherever the patch/ISO are stored. (I assume you didn’t put them into system32.) Batch files should run from the folder they’re stored in, so that’s bizarre. You do have everything all in the same folder, and you’re double-clicking on the batch file to run it, right?

      It’s not a 64-bit thing, since I’m on a 64-bit OS as well.

If you don’t have any luck getting the batch file to run properly, you could try opening a command prompt window (Start -> cmd) and navigating to the folder where you’ve got everything (“cd ..” to go up a level and “cd foldername” to go into foldername, without the quotes), then copy the command from the batch file into the command prompt window.

        Try the xdelta gui.
        1) Download and extract http://thejbnet.com/progs/xgui/app/xdeltagui.zip
        2) Launch xdeltagui.exe
        3) Go to Settings -> Paths, and browse to the “xdelta3-3.0.6-win32.exe” included with the patch.
        4) Original file = original ISO file, and patch = .xdelta file. (The GUI might be unresponsive when you select the ISO file and when you patch the file).

Thank you so much for the super quick response!! :) Yup, everything is in the same folder! Hmm, okay, so I’ve been right-click “Run as Administrator” running it but instead I decided to just double click and run it normally and now I get this: http://tinypic.com/r/280prvm/5 Still running from System32… super strange!
I then tried running from the Command Prompt like you said and it gave me the same “>pause” error, but this time it was from my danganronpa patch folder instead of the system32 folder (crap did this make sense? my knowledge of computers isn’t too good! :])

      • system32 in the top bar is normal. From that picture, it looks like it’s already outputted a patched ISO, which is why it’s telling you it can’t overwrite it. You should see a file named “Danganronpa [EN][v1.0][Full].iso” sitting in C:\Users\Maria\Danganronpa, about 1.24 GB. That’s the English game.

For JPCSP users, remember to tick the “Use vertex cache” on “Video” tab so that the game can works fine on choosing objects.

Sometime there are a small group of objects will jump into another (for example information for object A display on object B), that is the emulator problem, nothing to be afraid of. Still nothing improve until now (my build is 3231)

And I recommend using JPCSP in case PPSSPP until they make a better improvement. Just for people who don’t have PSP like me. :( That’s all I want to share.

P/S: Sorry for saying this twice, I already tweet this to @ProjectZetsubou but then found that it should be posted here, instead on Twitter.

I remember this part. If I remember correctly, enable “Enable VAO” maybe works. Sometime you have to disable the “Use vertex cache” so that it can work on little objects that you cannot touch while the “Use vertex cache” is enable.

Configure these can crash the game graphic and you have to reset the game and redo it. (Like tick some boxes about shader) This make me feel like crazy because I can’t remember most of the parts each times I encounter new problem, and I also forgot to wrote them down. This is the minus point that I don’t like about JPCSP. :(

Right, I seem to crash at the Execution cutscenes while using JPCSP for some reason, my JPCSP ver 3252 for clarification.

For chapter 1’s Execution, it skips, for Chapter 2’s Execution, it downright crashes

A quick inquiry though…how long should patching usually take? I tried doing it earlier and let it run for about three hours before I (stupidly) thought something went wrong and restarted my computer. I saw in the game folder after the restart I had an unfinished version of the patched .iso…so, should I just wait it out or what?

    Reply
    • It should only take around five minutes or so. xdelta is kind of useless about giving progress updates, but you should be able to see the size of the file slowly growing as it chugs away.

    Reply
    • That means it’s working. xdelta doesn’t give status updates, so it just looks like it’s sitting there. It’ll probably take around five minutes or so to finish patching. You can watch the size of the “Danganronpa [EN][v1.0][Full].iso” file slowly grow as it works to apply the patch.

Thats the problem, the patched iso doesn’t appera on the folder. Is the ISO saved in another directory?
I’m downloading .net framework 4 to try and use the other method posted, but it might take a while

      • It should, in theory, appear in the same folder, but it’s very possible it ended up somewhere else. You could try editing the batch file to give it an absolute path to output the ISO, such as “C:\Danganronpa [EN][v1.0][Full].iso”

  48. I’m running this on my PSP with PRO-C2 cfw, and it freezes on the loading screen right when I choose to start a new game. The original, unpatched iso runs fine, and I can run the patched version on JPCSP, but why won’t it work on my PSP?

    Reply
    • I downloaded the version with movies, by the way. Does the one without them just not have them translated…?

      Reply
      • That does sound like it might be a movie thing, yeah. I know older firmwares have had issues with running the game’s movies, but you said you were on PRO-C2 (6.60?), which is what we did most of our testing on, so I’m not sure why it would be giving you trouble, hmm.

The “No Movies” patch omits the translated movies and leaves the original, untranslated videos in (except for one short clip in ch2 which is translated in both versions).

  49. Showing my despair regarding JPCSP right now, lol. Basically, from what I’ve been reading (and experiencing) there are two major issues. The first one are those who can’t get through the classroom (or crash before then). On my machine, by just having Vertex Cache activated and all the other options set to default this becomes a non-issue and the game plays properly.

On the other hand, what’s happening to me and one particular friend are random audio issues, like the music having some slowdowns that don’t happen because of framerate drops. i’m not sure if it’s related, but this leads to a bigger problem: when you get to the room where everyone meets for the first time and start introducing themselves, quite a few times before a dialogue shows up on the dialogue box, the game will hang for 10-15 seconds, before playing a voice clip (and displaying the text).

PPSSPP, from what I gather, doesn’t have this happening, but it’s useless right now due to the investigation bits not working on the emulator.

    Reply
    • Yeah, that seems to be the case apparently. I’m having the same problems with both emulators. And for JPCSP, some parts in the game works better without vertex cache ticked, so it’s a constant process of ticking and unticking it whenever I encounter a problem. It works fine on the PSP though. Hopefully they’ll release a newer version of the emulator to accommodate this patch release.

I tried the No Movies version to see if maybe it was the movies that were messing it up. The game starts for 2 seconds only to immediately shut off.

    Reply
    • Even the “No Movies” patch technically still has movies. It just has the unedited, untranslated ones. If your PSP is having trouble playing any movies at all, it would make sense that it’s crashing almost as soon as it starts up. One of the first things the game shows is a very short video.

6.60 PRO-C is definitely capable of playing the movies (that’s what most of the team uses), though I know older firmwares have trouble freezing and crashing.

    • Easiest thing to do is either use the GUI patcher or open up the batch file and give it absolute locations for the files. So instead of this:
      xdelta3-3.0.6-win32.exe -d -s "Danganronpa.iso" danganronpa-1.0-full.xdelta "Danganronpa [EN][v1.0][Full].iso"
you would do something like this:
      "Y:\Danganronpa\xdelta3-3.0.6-win32.exe" -d -s "Y:\Danganronpa\Danganronpa.iso" "Y:\Danganronpa\danganronpa-1.0-full.xdelta" "Y:\Danganronpa\Danganronpa [EN][v1.0][Full].iso"

What do the difficulties of the game mean? Is merciful or gentle easier? Which should I choose? Sorry, it is just a little vague and can’t find information on it anywhere on the internet without fear of spoilers.

    Reply
    • Easiest difficulty is on the left, hardest on the right. The game’s difficulties are not evenly distributed–a majority of puzzles only have two distinct versions–and the Japanese names for the difficulties are weirdly similar as well, which is why we translated them that way. Think of it as “Easy,” “Slightly Less Easy,” and “Hard.”

Hi! I’m new to all of this stuff, so excuse me if my problem is something stupid. Whenever I load the patched game in the emulator, I see the first screen then it fades to black and pauses- and I can’t unpause it! I think it has something to do with the fact the patcher keeps pausing itself? http://i.imgur.com/shY1du7.png

    Reply
    • The “pause” in the patcher is just there so the window doesn’t disappear if it has any errors. That’s completely intentional.

As for why it’s pausing in JPCSP, I’m not sure. Check out this comment for some tips on configuring the emulator and see if that helps.

It give me that invalid input error other people have gotten. So I tried patching with xdelta gui. That gives me “access denied” and then the batch file source. I’m at wits end, what can I do?!

Hi, I’m the hacker behind this project, and I’m trying to understand this bug.

      1) Which patch did you get? (Full or No-movie)
      2) What’s your PSP Model? (1000, 2000, 3000, Go)
      3) What’s your CFW version?
      4) Do you have any CFW plugins?
      5) Did you change any other CFW settings?

      • It’s definitely not Joliet, I can tell you that. The ISO was automatically generated with mkisofs, via our script editor, which has never given us any trouble producing ISOs compatible with the PSP. I’m glad to hear you got it working, though.

Why is this important to configuring it?

      • That means you have a bad dump. Based on what others have said, that looks like the CRC of a dump made by an older CFW. You can fix your problem by upgrading to a newer version and dumping the ISO again.

I’m glad the patch has been released, even though there are some errors. But I’ve just come across this and have to ask, why was the spelling of “[SPOILERS]” changed? I’m aware the name is not pronounced like it’s spelled, but it’s kind of a glaring error. “[SPOILERS]” is the OFFICIAL spelling, and people are used to it..

    Reply
    • We mentioned this in the translation notes, but we did it for consistency. Both of them are legitimate romanizations of the Japanese, but the “official” spelling is inconsistent with our romanization style. So we opted to change it to fit our style. That’s the same reason we didn’t use “Hihumi” or “Hukawa” or any of the other alternative romanizations that have appeared in official material.

I have the same problem with the analog stick not working. It works fine in the web browser and other games. But when it comes to Danganronpa the analog stick ceases to function. I tried it on 6.60 PRO-B10 and PRO-C Fix 3 .

I would like to report that I downgraded to 5.00 M33-6 and it appears to be working so far. I was going to test 5.50 Prometheus 4 but couldn’t get the game to launch, but it should work if you managed to get it to launch. I don’t have a solution for those who plan to stick with 6.60 though.

Its happening to me too. i have one of the first psps, the fat ones and am using 6.60 pro-C fix 3 and the analog just doesnt work at all althought it works on all other games. Ive already tried 6.60 pro-C2, pro-B10,pro-B8 and LME1.8 and it still doesnt work. The analog still doesnt work if i dont apply the patch so its nothing to do with the patch but what i dont understand is why some people have no problem at all using this firmware and some have it :(

    • hey, here just to give a small update on the analog not working problem. I decided to downgrade to cfw 5.00 m33-6 and then patched the iso with the program iso tool so it works on that cfw since its kinda old and now the analog seems to be working fine, so i guess it was a problem with the the cfw, maybe an imcompatibility of 6.60 pro with fat psps or something like that (i have no idea) xD
I have just played the beginning so i dont know if there will be any problems later but at least the analog is working now so thats cool. Thanks for the translation guys :)

In the meantime, could you give us some more information on exactly what hardware/model you’re trying to run it on? Hi, I’m the hacker behind this project, and I’m trying to understand this bug.

      1) Which patch did you get? (Full or No-movie)
      2) Do you have any CFW plugins?
      3) Did you change any other CFW settings?

Sorry for all of these questions, but I want to know what’s different about your PSP so I can turn my PSP into that and find the bug. Thanks.

Okay, thanks for answering my question. I just want to check some more things with you.

      1) What OS are you using to patch the game?
      2) Can you check the checksums of your ISO? For Windows, you can use this:

      http://www.paehl.de/cms/node/64

On Mac, you can launch your Terminal and run the “md5″ command:

      http://osxdaily.com/2009/10/13/check-md5-hash-on-your-mac/

      On other *nix, use “md5sum”:

      http://heatware.net/linux-unix/how-to-create-md5-checksums-and-validate-a-file-in-linux/

Thank you for being so cooperating.

Both Windows techniques are failing for me. GUI says it can’t find the patched file (i thought it’s supposed to make it…?) And the “apply patch” way runs into an error containing invalid input? Uuuu

    Reply
    • The invalid input error most likely means the ISO you’re trying to patch doesn’t match the one we used to create the patch. Compare the hashes of your ISO with the hashes given in this post. The HashTab page linked in that post seems to be down right now, so you might need to find an alternative source for that. If the hashes don’t match, then you’re going to have to re-dump your ISO (or otherwise get your hands on a clean dump, something we can’t help you with).

I’m having the same problem. The game skips both the ballot and the execution (it actually starts loading them, flashes for a frame or so, then starts loading the scene that follows). The scenes can be played just fine through the Extras menu. This has happened both in Chapter 1 and 2 so far. Using a PSP Fat w/ 6.60 C2.

Going to elaborate further on my previous post.
Same setup, happened with 6.60 C (can’t confirm which version) and C2. As I said before, the scenes can be played through the Extras menu, BUT you cannot have played the game and go into the Extras through Load to watch them. They won’t play that way. You need to reset and then they’ll play fine. This happened for every movie in the game.

    • I’m having the same problem of the execution movies not showing, but my CGs look fine. I’m using JPCSP (2838).

However, as soon as Naegi falls unconscious he wakes up and says
    “…”
    “………..”
    “………. hmm?”
And as soon as I press x to get to the next piece, no more dialogue appears
the screen just stays black (he hasn’t opened his eyes yet) and even the music continues, but simply nothing is happening, which is a real shame. v.v

  88. This is one of the best fan translations I have ever seen. Every little thing is taken into account, and all of the characters have little quirks to the way that they speak, which really shows a lot of love and effort from the translation team. The technical side of things is almost just as impressive. There are so many translated images, and the way that the game works in Class Trial mode in English seems like it was made that way to begin with. I truly appreciate this effort as it has made it possible for me to have a shared experience with my wife who is a huge fan of Dangan Ronpa. She played the Chinese fan translation a few months ago, and we have been waiting (im)patiently for this release so that we could play it in English together.

I recommend anyone with a PSP2000 to get a hold of the component cables and play on a big screen.

OK, here is some tips for running the game on JPCSP. I’m using the latest version, r3248. Like Kingofgames981 said, have vertex enabled at all times. Whenever you have trouble with investigating a room (because the game will send you to another item when you click on it) save, quit out of JPCSP, open it back up, and enable “software rendering,” and start the game back up. After you clear the room, I would recommend that you save the game, and undo software rendering. While it will seem to be running better initially, the game seems to degrade the longer it is on. Eventually you will be running a 1 FPS while in 3D mode and the game will hang after almost every conversation. Note because of the experimental nature of software rendering, it will work differently based on your version. When I was testing it out with an older version of JPCSP, it seemed to do a little better.

Also, make sure “media engine” and “decode audio files using “Sonic Stage” are enabled under the media tab. You will need Sony Sonic stage for the latter option. Sony no longer distributes it, so you will need to find a way to get it somewhere else. With both of these options enabled, the videos and audio should run very smoothly. I hope this information helps someone.

I have JPCSP v0.7 3270 64bit and installed SonicStage into its own folder within JCPSP (tried both as “SonicStage” and “Sonic Stage”) but I have no idea if the program is even recognizing it. Restarted JPCSP and my computer but nothing seems to change.

I still get BGM hiccups and voice clips taking forever to load, just like before I installed SS, and yes I have both ‘Media Engine’ and ‘Decode with SS’ selected. Only fix I’ve found is to ‘Disable audio blocking’ but then the voices cut in whenever they happen to load at the completely wrong point in the dialog.

Are you using 32 bit? When my brother got Sonic Stage set up into his low powered laptop, he still had audio issues (along with a good deal of lag). If this is the case, than I would recommend using PPSSPP. You need to look at other comments to see how to get it working.

      • Matt

         /  2013/06/30

Ignore my last comment. Somehow I missed your first few words (face palm). But I guess my solution still stands. Alternatively, you could downgrade to 3248 and see if that helps.

      • UnLucky

         /  2013/06/30

I tried 3248 first before getting 3270, and nothing seems to change (well the options screen is a bit different, but the issues remained). Are you saying your brother’s set up lagged after installing Sonic Stage, or just always did? I’m not sure I did it correctly, since the audio still hitches just like before.

I’m trying PPSSPP right now, but it’s got quite a few minor graphical issues and, as another comment mentioned, the voices can cut out entirely until a reset. JPCSP plays and looks a lot better, but the voices are reliably much worse.

      • UnLucky

         /  2013/06/30

I grabbed that atrac3plus2wav.exe and atracplug.dll thing and NOTHING changed yet again. I wish the program would give me some sort of feedback. Is there any way to tell what it’s using, or trying to?

The game runs at a good speed and looks great, but the voices are killing me here.

      • Matt

         /  2013/06/30

What is the severity of the cut outs? Compare it with what I had. I remember In the class trials the voices occasionally mess up. The BGM only stuttered when the dialogue came back after it froze for a moment, which there is no way of avoiding, as far as I’m aware. Is it more severe than that? If it is worse than that, than maybe you can show me your exact JCPSP directory and options, and I can tell you what is different than mine. If it is just the same things I had, than I can’t really help.

      • UnLucky

         /  2013/06/30

It’s as burucchi said, 10-15s pause possibly before every piece of dialog. Sometimes it’s nearly fluid, depends on when the BGM stutters. I’m pretty sure the music hiccups on its own, even when there isn’t any dialog, and I don’t really mind that one too much. I actually wish it happened more frequently since that’s when the voices finally decide to load.

It happened with whatever defaults 3248 came with, only thing I changed was the UMD directory (still on the same drive as JPCSP, though). I started tinkering with the settings after I encountered the hangups during the character introductions, but nothing seemed to do anything besides “Disable audio blocking”

      • Matt

         /  2013/07/01

I also had dialogue issues where occasionally it would hang for 10 seconds before displaying the text and voice, so I can’t really help you with that. And I also had the BGM stutter before the text would display. I thought the issues you were having were more serious than what I had. Sorry, I can’t really help you get it running any smoother.

I don’t believe I have any plugins installed and I haven’t changed any CFW settings.
I used to have 6.60 ME-1.8 but upgraded it to Pro C2 like I said before, so the settings that I had are the ones as before. I did have a couple of games with he other firmware so the settings shouldn’t be a problem.

And everyone on the team (except Vodka) really enjoys how the game controls with the buttons swapped.

Hey, same guy whose psp after updating to 6.60 cant use the dpad on the game. So i have tried other versions of 6.60 pro and even 6.60 ME 1.8 with no luck. So i decided to use the emulator JPCSP. And I need some help:
    1) There’s no audio in the movies.
    2) When a conversation is taking place, the game freezes for a while sometimes when the character speaking changes.
Is that normal from that emulator?

  102. Hey cool dudes I have a concern hope thats alright and all but for some reason on both PPSSPP and jpcsp no matter the version both will load the original Japanese game flawlessly but if I try to load the English version it crashes after the “Spike” screen. I’ve done everything right and I’ve tried many times on both to make it work but it just won’t. Is this possibly because of a difference in coding or my own stupidity I’m not all that sure but so far I’m not the only one with this problem. It’s also kind of impossible for me to get a PSP and Dangan Ronpa is rad to the max so it sucks that I can’t read the game itself right now but nonetheless thank you all for your hard work and I really hope the situation with the emulators is solved soon. Best wishes, you guys rock! <3

    • That’s bizarre. I was under the impression that problem was limited to actual hardware.

I know older versions of PPSSPP–from before we released the patch–had trouble loading the translated game, but I was sure that had already been fixed. It’s still not playable, but it should load at least. As for why it’s not working on JPCSP, I have no idea. Have you tried setting it up like Matt suggests in this comment?

Hi, I’m the hacker behind this patch. I just want to find out few things in order to reproduce the problem.

      1) What versions of JPCSP and PPSSPP are you using?
      2) What OS are you using to patch the game?
      3) Can you check the checksums of your ISO? For Windows, you can use this:

      http://www.paehl.de/cms/node/64

On Mac, you can launch your Terminal and run the “md5″ command:

      http://osxdaily.com/2009/10/13/check-md5-hash-on-your-mac/

      On other *nix, use “md5sum”:

      http://heatware.net/linux-unix/how-to-create-md5-checksums-and-validate-a-file-in-linux/

Thank you for being so cooperating.

      • 1) I’ve used different versions of the JPCSP program along with the latest ones to make sure it wasn’t just a certain version but here are the ones I had used:
        “jpcsp-r3248″
        “jpcsp-r3236″
        “jpcsp-2021″
        “jpcsp-r3085″
        “jpcsp-1772″
        As for PPSSPP:
        “ppsspp-v0.8″
        “ppsspp-v0.7.6″
the PPSSPP that was somewhat remade here: http://danganronpa.wordpress.com/2013/06/23/release-danganronpa-english-translation-v1-0/#comment-641 but it just freezes when I try to load the Dangan Ronpa ISOs, English or Japanese. [http://gyazo.com/5228d923d1958e592dc09d8e6c94c9af.png]
*I also want to note that when patching it took a couple of seconds which i thought was odd since the read me had mentioned taking several minutes.

        2) Forgive me if I kind of misunderstand this question but just in case I’m using Windows 7 on a home computer Lenovo, I have used both the demo and latest given patch, or if you’re referring to the game itself I am using the “Best” one. Once more really sorry if this is a misunderstanding of your question dude. :C

        3) Totally but I kind of have little understanding of it please message me back if I did it completely wrong or out of line!

I’m probably gonna look like a big idiot by asking this… I have the patched ISO all finished up, but once I try to get it back onto my PSP, it says I don’t have enough space. Because my PSP is in UMD Disc settings, is it saying the UMD doesn’t have enough space or the PSP itself? I only ask this because I have a pretty dinky Memory Stick in this thing so I don’t doubt that being a problem but I’m also pretty bad at this kind of thing so I could be completely clueless.

    • After you’ve dumped the game, you’ve gotta switch USB Device back to Memory Stick on your PSP, or you won’t be able to copy it over.

I have all of the appropriate firmware (6.60 Pro C2) and so on, I patched the game but whenever I try to play the patched game it starts the game but then it turns into a black screen and that’s it. What should I do? I checked that the japanese game works, and it does so it’s the patch that isn’t working with my PSP

For the people to which happens that the black screen after selecting the game(after the PSP logo) doesn’t dissappear, i already know how to undoit.
I had 6.60 pro-b i think, so i changed to 6.60-c2(something like that xD), erase the english version of the game that didn’t work and patch it again.
At first, the size of the one which didn’t work was like 400mb,
but when i finally did it again, already was like 1.2gb, and it seems it works just fine. :3
Thanks a lot for the comments of the people, for the producers of this game, and of course for the group which translated it. <3

Working for me on 5.00 m33, but you need to apply a prometheus patch with the latest isotool first (mhp631 worked for me). Also make sure to set UMD ISO Mode to M33 Driver from the m33 vsh menu, the game wouldn’t load for me with other modes (black screen at the start and psp shutting down after a few sec).

Thaaaaaaaanks Seizar, i try the lastest isotool with mhp631 module to patch the game and works on 5.00 m33-4 very well. Only one point: the isotool don´t have that module. I look hours for it (because the stupid people that only said “google it”, thats not than easy as it sounds). Well, finally i found it. If someone need it, can be downloaded from here: http://www.mediafire.com/download/0cl8t6df9ifq991/MHP631.zip#! and then only add the contents into PSP\GAME\iso_tool\. When you search for the list of modules of prometeus patch, the mhp631 will be there. But again, THANKS for your answer Seizar, and for your question subratos, thats guided me. And thanks to Project Zetsubou for this great translation!

The way that you guys have made the dialog flow in English, and the way that you’ve translated Japanese colloquialisms that generally don’t translate so well is so much better than many, many so-called professional localization teams from famous game developers.

If it takes you guys just as long to finish Super Danganronpa 2, or even longer than 2-ish years, I’ll still definitely be waiting eagerly. Once more, brilliant job, all of you. You guys have my eternal gratitude for making this game available to the English speaking masses.

I was so excited that the patch came out. I patched the japanese version and played with JPCSP (both 0.6 2838 and 3248) but the game freezes on first room (like that http://puu.sh/3nUBJ/f9f4efb2e2.jpg). It stays on “Pause”, if I click many times on “Run”, from time to time fragments of sounds are heard and game moves a bit, but it doesn’t go anywhere. Any suggestions?

I understand that you guys have a lot of questions to sift through and I’m sorry for adding to the pile, but I’ve noticed a couple comments from people with the same issue as me and none of them have been answered yet so

I’m using JCPSP and I have the original version of the game on there, and that one works fine. I downloaded the patch and ran the apply_patch.bat file. The English version shows up on the ‘load UMD’ screen, but when I click run it just shows a black screen.

I’m uncertain if the apply_patch.bat file needs to run longer? It takes a few seconds and then it says it’s paused and to press any key to continue. When I press a key it closes. Is it supposed to do this? Or is the problem caused by something else?

This is my first time using an emulator and dealing with ISO’s so I apologize if I’m missing something obvious.

    • Patching should definitely take more than a few seconds to run. Did xdelta output any messages? Have you verified the hash of the output ISO against the hashes in the post?

“xdelta3: to overwrite output file specify -f: Danganronpa [EN][v1.0][Full].iso”
It shows that right before saying that it’s paused and to press any key to continue.
How can I find the hash of the output ISO?

      • There are a few tools for doing that listed here.

      • Micah

         /  2013/06/25

Alright, I checked that the hash of the original ISO is the same as the hash on your post about obtaining the game, so that one is a clean dump. Is the ‘Danganronpa [EN][v1.0][full].iso’ the one that you wanted me to check? Because that one is:

        CRC32: 8bf37d5f
        MD5: b4c088c8acd7080b773bece28568c87a
        SHA-1:5df27dd6d8653590110e42dd5f6ee0dd40ac035c

These are not the same as the ones given in the post. How might I fix that?

      • Etsukazu

         /  2013/06/25

I have the same issue and I have no idea what I’m supposed to do when the hash doesn’t match.

      • I’m not sure if it’s the exact same problem (I’m on the Mac), but while I was trying to replicate errors, I DID get that “xdelta3: to overwrite…” thing. That happens when you use the same name for the output as the original ISO, so try specifying a different name?

I’m assuming you’re doing this: xdelta3 -d -s “Danganronpa [EN][v1.0][full].iso” danganronpa-1.0-full.xdelta “Danganronpa [EN][v1.0][full].iso” If so, just change the second one. If not, my bad!

You’re able to lock on objects but there’s still a glitch with the audio, if you don’t let the voice clips end the voices go out completely and you have to restart the emulator to get them back, definitely playable though. Figured out how to transfer JPCSP data to PPSSPP. When I did though, various other “free time” instances such as clicking onto one door triggers another door to be targeted. Examples being Chapter 1, Kirigiri’s door lead’s to MC, and Chapter 2, library door targets something else.

For everyone who wants to transfer saves:
after saving the game in JPCSP(Choose ElectroID and save in option under “System”) find a subfolder ms0 -> PSP -> SAVEDATA and copy the slot you put your save on. Then go to PPSSPP folder, memstick -> PSP -> SAVEDATA and paste the folder. You should be able to load the save in your game!

I doubt this well be read in the mountain of comments, but it can’t hurt to try.

In the midway point of chapter 5, I got stuck in an infite loading screen. I was wondering if I’m the only one who got this, or if it’s a common problem.

    Reply
    • There HAVE been some reports about Chapter 5, but it’s very possible that it was just an instance of one of the game’s own weird random freezing issues. It should be rare, and if you go back to the same spot, it may not happen again.

Thank you guys so much for the flawless translation, your hard work is greatly appreciated! If it weren’t for you people I wouldn’t have come across this brilliant game!

In my case, getting a patched ISO through the first method took something like an hour and a half on Windows 7, and the filesize was around 1.37GB in the folder but it slimmed down to 1.24 when I transferred it to the PSP. So for anyone out there whose computer is also taking forever to spit out the patch ISO, don’t despair – it’ll finish eventually.

Hi! I’m running on a macbook pro, OSX 10.4.8.

I’m doing everything that the mac instructions are telling me to do, but every time I run it through the terminal, I always get: -bash: xdelta3: command not found

This is what I am imputting (I made them the same as the example for my own use):

    xdelta3 -d -s “Danganronpa.iso” danganronpa-1.0-full.xdelta “Danganronpa [EN][v1.0][Full].iso”

Only the DR.iso and the xdelta patch are supposed to go into the Patcher folder, correct? Just those two and nothing else?

    Is this an xCode issue?

    Thanks!
    Mame

    Reply
    • Yes, that’s all the files you need, and you’re definitely inputting the right code…so it seems like you might not have xdelta3 installed properly. If you try inputting JUST xdelta3 and you get that same -bash: xdelta3: command not found, then yeah, that’s the issue.

Did you remember to type in brew install xdelta? And you can also check to see if you downloaded the correct version of XCode for your Mac, since that will impact whether xdelta is installed properly.

Yeah, I did the homebrew instructions and everything up until the patching command was working fine.

I had downloaded xCode just to be safe before I started all of this and installed it after I was having issues. Three hours for that thing, sheesh. It turns out it was thanks to not having it because it started patching after I redid everything. Things are running smoothly now, just gotta wait until it’s done patchin. Thank you so much!

this is a weird question but will i be REQUIRED to use the start or select buttons at any point during the game? just asking since my whole home bar on my psp is busted. i havent been able to access the the pause(electroid) screen with the square button like in the demo so im assuming its been moved to the start button.

The Electroid isn’t available until after the prologue.
And no, you can play just fine without start and select. Start is the help menu (which you don’t need since the game functions are already introduced in-game) and select is the backlog, which can already be accessed through the Electroid.

You need to set “FramebuffersToMem” to “True” in the ppsspp.ini. It’s on False by default since it can mess up performance in other games.
There’s still another bug though (see https://github.com/hrydgard/ppsspp/issues/1686), but apparently it doesn’t affect everyone.

I just finished playing, and I just wanted to say thank you guys so much for your patch. This is honestly one of the best translation patches (of any game, really) I’ve come across yet!

The game was so enjoyable because everything (even small things) were given attention! I seriously was not expecting minuscule details or moving text to be translated, so I was pretty much in awe during investigations and debates and etc. No small details were spared! Even the adaptations of language and script were well-done and refreshing, and it made the experience feel fun and immersive. Not to mention that each character has his or her own individual way of talking, which is something difficult to fully convey when translating into a different language. You guys fully brought the same feel to the characters that the Japanese does.
Overall you guys handled this game extremely well, and I’m hoping that you’ll do something else in the future (Dangan Ronpa 2 maybe?) This is seriously amazing work you did here.

    Thanks again!!

This is my experience with making an emulator run the english patch just incase this helps anyone (most of this has already been stated in previous comments):
If you are trying to use the PPSSPP emulator, try downloading the latest dev build of PPSSPP (http://www.ppsspp.org/downloads.html#devbuilds) then go to the ppsspp.ini file the emulator creates in the folder. Change “FramebuffersToMem = False” to “FramebuffersToMem = True”. Use the default settings.
This personally worked for me, going from a perfect emulation but unable to examine objects – a good emulation and actually being able to actually play the game properly. But heres the catch, this only works if you play in 1x render resolution and do no resize the window. It is a small price to pay if you want a temporary fix before someone comes up with a proper one.

I can get the cursor to finally work in PPSSPP thanks to the comments above, the problem now is that the cursor selects the previous object instead of the one you are selecting (i.e. clicking the infirmary in the hall makes the cursor select the shop to the right, clicking the men’s bathroom to the left of the infirmary selects the infirmary, selecting the women’s bathroom further to the left selects the men’s bathroom, and so on). This is apparently what eventually messes everyone else up when they get to the actual investigation part of the game.

I would rather not use jpcsp because its unbearably laggy. I did have setting on that made the game run just as good as ppsspp, but the GE to texture instead of memory option(that makes the game run perfectly) disables the cross hair at a cost. even with vertex cache enabled.

I have the same problem with the logo screen on the newest ppsspp, like someone commented above. Skipping it makes the game crash. Any ideas to fix this? Thank you so much for the hard work done to release this gem of a fan translation, by the way!

Also, usuing 6.60 PRO firmware, sometimes the game gets stuck during loading screens. Does this always happen, or is it a patching error?

Not only that, but it keeps freezing during dialogue sometimes, too, even during the class trial. I’m using PRO 6.60 C2 firmware.

I just finished the game! I would like to thank the team again for the hard work! :)

There is something bugging me though: I finished the entire game but I’m missing a couple of movies. And do they have something major to contribute to the story line? After I’ve seen the ending and epilogue, it doesn’t seem to fill my satisfaction to the brim.

It runs fine at ppsspp but the programm itself don’t have option for export object, like jpcsp. Save files from ppsspp don’t word with jpcsp.
So, i can only make a screenshots. Disapointment.

I just finished the game, and was in fact, very, very disappointed. First things first, the translation was without a doubt very professional and better than what real translation companys throw halfheartedly on the market. You did not even get paid and did a better job than them, who get paid for their lousy work? That is just despairy-awesome! You are amazing and your translation, naturally, is also top-notch. I greatly appreciate your hard work, and hope that you will translate all the other Danganronpa games and light novels too. Thank you very much. :)

As for the game’s story, it was plain silly, by all means underwhelming and misleading in the worst way possible. First, I REALLY hate wishy-washy protagonists, who cannot speak up for themselves, protect themselves and are too stupid to do the simplest thing right. Also above all, his gibberish about friendship, trust and nobody being able to betray anyone, was the least I wanted to hear about. I mean, how can you be friends from the get-go, and be so naïve to believe everyone views you as a friend, and will not betray you under no circumstances? Friendship is nothing worth, not in the virtual world nor in the real life. I experienced it all too often first-hand. Humans cannot be friends as long as they can feel emotions. Greed, envy, hatred, love – every positive and negative emotion can destroy a friendship. I am done with playing friends, ’cause if you are always betrayed, why even bother to try so hard to find “real friendship,” which does not even exist?

I played on the most difficult degree, and had to hold my wrath back, because he was not smart enough to understand the easiest question and could not reach the right conclusion, ALTHOUGH it was as easy as to spot a black stain on a white wall. I would understand his stupidity if I played on the easiest degree, but I did not. He repeated every little thing, despite me already knowing who the murderer was, and that from the beginning. It was so easy to reveal the murderer and his motive, I was even asking myself if I was just too smart, or the game’s story writer too stupid. I knew for EVERY case the murderer without looking on the evidence, the mastermind was not a surprise to me at all. It was just THAT obvious. Why, you ask? Because every cliché that you saw in the game was like you would assume. Here is an example just for you. If you see a blonde girl, what would you think of her? She is really smart, would not you? No, you would assume that every blonde girl you see is stupid. And that just happened in the game, my assumption was always right on the spot – like the cliché suggested. Without a doubt, this view is wrong, since the hair color cannot determine one’s intelligence, and that is why I think the writer cannot write well. There was also no character development at all, since the characters were already dead before the development begins. You do not get a damn thing to know about them. I know what I am talking about, because I was featured in a well-known magazine as a debut author and won a few awards in my country. The writer must be a really amuteur, if I am so harsh. Normally, I would not spend so much time on criticizing something, but this was just too much for me to bear. I would love to write what else was plain stupid, and of course about the unlimited plotholes that the author willingly or not ignored, but since spoilers are not welcome here, I will refrain from doing so. Once a really well-known human from my country said this “Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I’m not sure about the universe.”. This is just how I feel about the story.

I would really love to hear your thoughts on the game.

    • Wow. Thanks for taking the time to type all that out.

Not to sound like I’m trying to psychoanalyze you or anything, but I get the feeling you might be letting your emotions get in the way of you seeing what the actual text is saying. Naegi (and a couple other people) gets a whole lot of crap throughout the game for his “let’s all get along and be friends” stuff. He’s constantly being criticized and mocked for being such an idealist, and his good intentions come back and bite him in the ass on more than one occasion. If anything, I think the game is using Naegi to make a comment on the overuse of “the power of friendship” as a magical problem solver in shounen anime/manga and other media. It’s trying to show just how much shit blind trust and optimism can get you into in a less ideal world–one where people can actually die.

And Danganronpa does this again and again. Obviously, not everything is a subversion, but there’s enough breaking away from the archetypes that you can never quite tell how a character is going to be handled. People who look like they would be strong end up succumbing to their weakness. People who look like they’re going to be dumb end up being surprisingly intelligent. People who look cold-hearted end up being the most influenced by their emotions. And even the characters who are played straight are done so more to the effect of “what would happen if this archetype were placed in a life-or-death situation?”–much like Naegi with his idealism.

The game plays on your expectations by starting you off with a cast that looks like nothing more than a room full of clichés, and then it develops them into something much more. Even the characters who die really early on have their time in the spotlight, and there’s a wealth of additional information to be found in the individual characters’ Free Time events.

Yes, they have their time in the spotlight, but not nearly enough to call it character development. Again, I cannot say anything story-related.

It sounds like you’d get along well with Togami. =P
And yes, friendship is as worthless as you make it out to be. It’s really up to each individual, what they make of the meaning of friendship.
…Though I’d tend to think that if you find friendship meaningless, you just haven’t found the right fit for you yet. But that might just be my experience with a phase of dismissive isolation speaking. =P

It’s a Japanese anime-centric game. It would be surprising if it wasn’t ridiculous. My reaction was a little different though. I was underwhelmed by the beginning, but was surprised at how good and plot-twisty it got towards the middle and end. I do think the whole “hope” thing was a bit ridiculous and unrealistic, but I think the rest of the game does a surprisingly well job at portraying negative and cynical scenarios among relationships that you initially assume were positive and trusting.

… I get the feeling you might be letting your emotions get in the way of you seeing what the actual text is saying.

No, in fact, I am a rationalist. I analyze every sentence, and after I see the possibilities and “all” unforeseeable events before my eyes, I come to a conclusion. I will not be swayed by mere emotion. Naegi on the other hand can be manipulated by anyone, as seen throughout the game. I would love to name some examples, but as there is no way to hide spoilers, I cannot do so.

He’s constantly being criticized and mocked for being such an idealist, and his good intentions come back and bite him in the ass on more than one occasion.

That is right, but normally, you would not do the same mistake over and over again. This would be then called character development, but as he does not develop in the least, I cannot call this good writing. If I know that stealing would result in a harsh penalty, would I really do it again, and after I got punished once again, I would do it again? He trusted people that had a thick “Liar” sign over their head, even the dumbest would become aware of it. But he did not – he called it optimism, his only trait that was outstanding, but I call it simply stupid. If his character were written different, then he could have changed the outcome. There were so many hints to solve the riddles surrounding the academy – even on the first floor. His approach was totally wrong, in the court he would immediately back off if someone said something to him. He was always a small person with false ideals, he never came out of his shell. At the end of case 1 I already knew who the mastermind was, the author gave too hints that were too obvious to my eyes.

People who look like they would be strong end up succumbing to their weakness.

That is not true, it was easy to determine their character traits based on their appearance. I was not once mistaken, because the way they speak, how they interact with others and their already visible traits additionally gave their hidden traits away. I could then draw conclusions based on the above informations.

The game plays on your expectations by starting you off with a cast that looks like nothing more than a room full of clichés, and then it develops them into something much more.

That is simply not true! Did we really play the same game, I do not think so. First off, this room full of clichés did not develop in something much more. I could give you the profiles of every student at the beginning, and then we could compare the changes at the end. There will not be much room for discussion. If there were a way to hide specific sentences, then I could prove my arguments.

Even the characters who die really early on have their time in the spotlight, and there’s a wealth of additional information to be found in the individual characters’ Free Time events.

I’m gonna have to agree with this. Even the free time events didn’t do much to develop the characters.

For example, my first impression of Leon is that he is very wild and carefree. Then we enter a free time event and learn that he wants to be a musician… just so he can get girls. There’s no development there.

Then we have Asahina, the stereotypical sporty chick with her head in the clouds. Do some free time events and you convince her to continue training even though she is imprisoned in the school. Not much depth to be found there.

All-in-all, I think this game (and of course, the translation!) was great in terms of plot, music and art, but character development was definitely was weak point.

    • I think we’re misconstruing what constitutes as character development.

Character development doesn’t have to be some drastic change in personality, and more often that not, that’s a show of poor writing. Really, look at people in real life – most of them, under almost any circumstance, will not even be willing to change their opinion, let alone change drastically in personality. It /is/ development to just make someone seem more human by fleshing out more details about them, because surely you didn’t know everything there was about the characters right off the bat? The game develops them by giving more information about their past. From their first appearance in the prologue, the characters ARE fleshed out a lot from the 2D cardboard. It /is/ development to fine-tune the same basic personality as first presented, because something simple like, “arrogant,” does not describe Togami at all. That’s how he was first presented, but there are many facets to that arrogance that the game provides you with, and so he’s developed.

Admittedly some characters have weaker development than others, but of course, some of them die early – and Free Time events, while helpful, cannot replace the extra screen time the others have. Even still, I think every character had some degree of development, and some of them were developed very well, in fact. I do agree that Naegi is somewhat lacking in initiative, but again, that’s just who he is. And even though he’s stepped on, he holds on to his ideals. You can see this as being static, or you can see it as development that Naegi, despite seeming like a wet noodle sometimes, actually is much more firm in his beliefs than anyone thinks at first. Was it really a mistake to be like that?

Anyway, BDH has made a new thread to talk about the game without having to worry about spoilers, so feel free to take the discussion there! I just wanted to address the character development point here really quickly.

-SPOILERS (kind of, but not really)-
I noticed it was mentioned once before, but I figured I’d throw out that on one of the Chapter 5 choices (point out the lie), I got an infinite loading screen after the end of it. The one that leads on the game, (not pointing out) led to nothing of the sort. I tested it three times and it happened all three. It was mentioned that the bug was random, so maybe I just had bad luck. I was on my PSP 2000 (Daxter Bundle Edition), CFW is 6.60 LME 1.8. Other than that, the entire game and translation has worked perfectly

Unfortunately not. I have about 30 separate saves and I ended up deleting most of them to clear up space on my memory stick, along with the game. I do still have the end game save, though, that I beat the game with. It’s a continuation of the older save I used to go back to that point, so I don’t know if you want it or not.

    Hey, thanks for the translation!

I have a small problem involving the cutscenes which doesn’t make the game unplayable, but, ruins a bit of its flow. The execution scenes don’t play (with the exception being the third one, I’m clueless as to why only this execution played). Instead, I am shown the revolver loading screen twice in a row with a split second break in between. The ballot/lottery cutscenes are inconsistent; The first 3 trials didn’t show ballot scenes whereas the fourth did (Upon replaying the first trial it did show the ballot scene but not the execution). Finally, the murder scenes are replaced with a strange, pixelated, grey and black image (I can go back and attempt to screenshot this if necessary). Despite these issues I can watch the movies I’ve unlocked, in the extras menu, with no problems.

I’m using cfw 6.20 Pro B-10 – PSP 3000 – I’d prefer not to update my cfw to 6.60 if possible
I’m using the Full Patch, I’ve already checked the MD5 and that’s fine
The only plugin I’m aware of is PRXShot, a screenshot plugin.
I don’t believe I’ve changed any cfw settings

Thanks again for the translation and thanks in advance if anyone is able to provide help or a solution for these issues.

I’m playing the Full Patch on JPCSP 64-bit with SonicStage enabled, and the execution scenes show up as a 15-second clip of static with something like ‘this is a faked video file’ at the bottom, during gameplay. On another computer I had been using the 32-bit version without SonicStage and the video clips played correctly, but without audio.

It’s likey a problem with the emulator using SonicStage, but if someone could confirm it’s not this patch by checking the no movies version, that would be swell.

I’m completely baffled why this happens as others with the same firmware/model can run it. Any help?

Hey, I’m playing this game on my PSP and I’m still at the prologue since I just started playing. I’m encountering a problem with the music, where it seems that after a song ends it doesn’t continue to loop so I’m stuck with no music until a new song starts. It doesn’t seem to be affecting the sound effects and voices, but I remember having a problem with Demo where there was no music during the machinegun round making it kinda awkward.

I’m using a “God of War” PSP-2000 with 6.60 Pro-C2 on it. I think I’ll try changing the CFW on it to an earlier one and see if that will fix it, but I was wondering if anyone found a workaround for it or was experiencing the same problem.

I just looked over your TL Notes – so THAT’S what High-Roller meant. I thought it was a reference to her being a faux-ojousama social climber / rich girl type, then was dumbfounded when she started talking about her luck. I never realised she was supposed to be a gambler (and much of the conversation about it made no sense as a result).

Similar with [SPOILER]. I paused the game and googled the term, as I couldn’t figure out why [SPOILER].

These aside, I loved your translations. They really gave life to the game and to the characters. I can’t even imagine how much work it was to typeset every little thing.

Hey I followed the guide for PPSSPP perfectly but when I run the patch all it does is create a smaller Iso (60mb) in english but the 1.64gb japanese ISO stays untouched.
If I open the english Iso nothing happens and if I open the other one I get to play but no english patch. Any ideas on what I did wrong?

    Reply
    • The Japanese ISO should be 1.67 GB (1,801,584,640 bytes). Is xdelta giving you an error? Maybe it’s giving up early on in the process because the Japanese ISO isn’t a clean dump or something.

So I followed the instructions to download this but when i try putting the Danganronpa [EN][v1.0][Full].iso into the umdimages folder, once i run the start-windows-x86 and try to load the UMD, a window pops up without anything in it but a white screen. The command prompt says “Exception in thread “Umd browser – Umd info loader” java.lang.ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException: 0

I keep getting a message when I click “apply patch” that tells me that the iso cannot be found. This happens even if I try to drag the iso onto it.

    • Is the ISO in the same folder as the patch and named “Danganronpa.iso”? (Make sure it’s not “Danganronpa.iso.iso” which can happen if you have extensions hidden.)

Excuse me, is it because of the patch, the iso or from the game itself, that the voices in introduction only says things like: “Huh, Ano, Uhg”.. or something like that?

Hello, I’ve followed the instructions perfectly but when I try and patch everything in the xdeltagui, the access is denied? http://i.imgur.com/ZmpJZFd.png I bought the game, and dumped it myself, also the hash tags are the same one’s shown. So I’m not particularly sure why I’m receiving these errors? Also, when I try and click on the apply_patch file this happens http://i.imgur.com/s5VZtwB.png. With that http://i.imgur.com/TjVpSZq.png the 3-3.0.6-win32.exe file disappears whenever I try and patch it by using the, settings > patch on xdelta.

I’ve tried everything, but I’m unsuccessful.

For some reason when I load up the .iso the message “PPSSPP has stopped working” appears and then I have to close the program. I asked a few people and most determined that the .iso was the problem. This is the fully translated english patch from nyaa but I don’t think anything is wrong with this. I’ve never used .iso but one thing that I think is strange is that the file appearance is for .zip files. Other than that I see nothing wrong with it or the PPSSPP emulator.

I actually found the reason that this message happens. It’s because I change the .ini content under graphics, FramebuffersToMem and FramebuffersCPUConvert, to True when they’re supposed to be false. The problem now is that I don’t know how to fix this problem

    I’m just wondering. When I try to patch the Danganronpa.iso with the apply_patch Batch file, it says that xdelta isn’t an operable file or something. And also that it gets scanned by norton and then removed because it isn’t safe. Is there something I’m doing wrong? I’d like to be able to play this on my HTC One s. ;=;

I accidentally pressed Start when it started showing a trailer for another game(?) and the game froze, and I had to restart. I haven’t had any problems with it at all except for this one time and I’m wondering if anyone else has had this problem.

Well, NIS just announced that they’re localizing the first game by itself of the Vita Version. I think that that’s a bad idea, because of the fan translation being so recently released, most people that wanted to play thje game would have already played it, or don’t own a Vita. I don’t have a Vita, myself.

I’m still unable to select anything in 3D mode, even though I’m using the latest version of PPSSPP, and changed both FrameBuffersToMem and FrameBuffersCPUConvert to True.
I suppose it may be because I had to turn BufferedRendering to False (the only other change I made to the .ini file), but if I keep that on True, the game doesn’t play at all (PPSSPP crashes when I try to start Dangan Ronpa). I’m pretty sure the patch was applied correctly, because, as I mentioned, it works when BufferedRendering is on False (except for the selecting stuff part).
Anyone know how to fix this?

I’m having one really weird issue that prevents me from continuing the game. In Chapter 5, after Monokuma Theater XVI (the one with the game trailer) and after the school bell message that happens at the start of each day, the game shows Naegi’s room and then fades to black, which usually results in Monokuma announcing the morning from the monitor… except it doesn’t happen. The screen remains black and nothing loads. I’ve never had any issue with the game previously and it’s never stopped for me at any point of the game similar to this one. I’ve reloaded and got to that point several times more but the same thing always happened.

I’m running the game on the PPSSPP build that was mentioned earlier here that contained a fix for AMD users (https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B1myg_QircHaVXNJbTU1bms1NHM/edit?usp=sharing) but I’m wondering if anyone has run into this problem before on any emulator?

Hello, I have a weird problem with running the game in ppsspp. During Chapter 6, when I have a conversation with [SPOILERS], there is a bit that cuts to a flashback of something [SPOILERS] says. However when the flashback is done, ppsspp always crashes. I’ve tried this with multiple builds and the order in which I check out [SPOILERS] and it’s always that one bit when the screen flashes white and finishes the flashback. Has anyone experienced a similar problem and/or able to think of a fix?

I tried other ppsspp builds, i even tried to transfer my save data to JPCSP just to get through that scene, but it doesnt seem to load the save data in JPCSP, it just says it loaded it and goes right back to the title screen, any help with that, would also be appreciated
but i do still have the problem of the game crashing around that scene in chapter 6 just like Reminisce, no other PPSSPP builds load the scene either without it crashing either i really don’t know what to do at this point, so if anyone could offer a fix to this i would be grateful

      • To load data in JPCSP, you have to enable “Handle SAVEDATA in crypto mode” under “Crypto” in the configuration.

Regarding your PPSSPP problem, GitHub commenters suggest you can get past it by disabling “Hardware transform” in the options menu.

    G:\ISO>xdelta3-3.0.6-win32.exe -d -s “Danganronpa.iso” danganronpa-1.0-full.xdel
    ta “Danganronpa [EN][v1.0][Full].iso
xdelta3: target window checksum mismatch: XD3_INVALID_INPUT
xdelta3: normally this indicates that the source file is incorrect
xdelta3: please verify the source file with sha1sum or equivalent

    G:\ISO>pause
Press any key to continue . . .

i have also tried patching with the xdeltagui but it never yields any new file

    • That means the file you’re trying to patch doesn’t match the one we used to create the patch. That could mean you’re trying to patch the original version and not the PSP The Best edition, or it could mean you have a dump created with older firmware, which is missing a bunch of bytes at the end. The filesize/hash for a clean dump is in the post, so you can always check to make sure you have the right file.

I completed the game and I say Good job! This game was great, also very nicely translated.

I had some issues with freezes two times. (yes that few haha)
I used PSP GO with CFW 6.60 C2. I had a freeze after a viedio of the shenobi game trailer, I fixed this by just loading and skipping the videio when it came.
    -Rather annoying issue imo

Also during the class trial preperation scene, if I used the PSP pause game function. When I loaded again, if I pressed I am finished preapering. It would not do anything. Leaving me stuck. Fixed this by loading 1 save back with the normal save system.
-not so important as You will always save before the pre-class scene.

Also a big thanks for tranlsating this. I had a real big joy playing it ^^

I love the translation. There were a couple bugs here and there. Perhaps because I was playing on a PPSSPP.

I now have a fatal issue though. At the beginning of the fifth chapter, after the first conversation in the cafeteria, I get stuck in an infinite loading loop. I saved my game just before the loading screen. I attempted to load up my save state, but it just did the same thing. I turned off my PPSSPP and it did it again. I’m going to try a couple more things. But, I wonder if anyone else has had an issue in this particular spot.

Fantastic translation! The graphical edits and the handling of some of the text-heavy gameplay elements really go above and beyond what I’d ever expect from a fanproject. I’ll definitely be buying the official Vita English translation too when it comes out to support the developers.

Technical note and suggestion for people trying to run on JCPSP:

My laptop has an integrated video card; I tried using PPSSPP at first, but the selection bug made it unworkable. JCPSP ran it, but was too sluggish until I switched to software rendering.

Here’s a helpful tip for JCPSP users running into slowdowns: play the game MOSTLY in software rendering, then switch out of it when you hit a selection error, then switch back. In addition, you may find that frames and audio start to skip if you play for a while. In that case, just switch out of software rendering and switch back! You don’t need to save and quit. Just go to the options menu, uncheck the software rendering box, apply, recheck it, and apply again. Scene graphics may be a bit jaggy and plain in software rendering, but the game’s playable and cutscenes and characters look good.

I was able to get through the entire game this way on my machine without any bugs besides the jagged graphics in software rendering.

Hi, I’ve been trying all day to get this to work, but it seems I keep doing things wrong. I use a PSP 2000 slim and I have the Best Buy edition of Dangan Ronpa. The first thing that went wrong was that everything freezes when I extract the 6.60 Sony firmware. I’ve tried multiple times and it won’t work. The upate folder along with the file shows up when I look at the PSP folder on my computer, but since it seems like it was interrupted, I wasn’t sure it would work. I checked my PSP for the specified update, but there’s nothing. The CFW worked fine to extract and those files showed up on the PSP, on the other hand.

Since I couldn’t get it to not freeze, I moved on, attempting to apply the patch. It got to a point where it said to press any key to continue, and upon doing so, the window closed down. I didn’t know if it had finished or failed, so I moved on to the GUI part. It just gives me this as I press Apply: http://media.tumblr.com/ab3e006b394187fa8d87b704996c51ed/tumblr_inline_mps99lOdTu1qz4rgp.png
I tried checking out hashtab and I downloaded the thing as well as installed, but after that there’s no next step (I’ve never used it before so I have no idea what to do).

For those like me who only have a 1gb memory stick, you can use PSP ISO compressor to compress the patched iso into cso. It should come out to about 902mb so you if you have a lot of things on your psp, I suggest you back them up. Otherwise it plays fine so far.

and if the solution is get a bigger memory card then where would i put it on my psp

Great job on the translation! It really shows you put a lot of time and effort into it, especially since I’m assuming a lot of things were in kana and they were all typeset into English characters.

Thanks for all the hard work!!!

I’m having a bit of an issue. I have the 3000 PSP model. I’ve got the 6.60 official firmware and I’m using 660 PRO-C. I do have “The Best” Edition of the game, and I downloaded the Full Patch v1.0. I followed all of the instructions and ran the “apply_patch” batch file and it created the Danganronpa [EN][v1.0][Full] file. I’ve verified all of the file sizes and hashes for both the original ISO and the patch file and they all match up. But when I run the patched game on my PSP it shows the SPIKE logo and then turns black and my PSP turns off. The original ISO seems to run fine though so I’m not sure what’s wrong? I’ve tried deleting the English patch file a couple times thinking maybe something went wrong and re-running the apply_patch file but it doesn’t seem to help.

    • Creamsicle seems to have had luck with this, as she notes here. I assume by “the DRM one,” she means she means the “NoDRM Engine” option under “Advanced,” but I’m not sure. I would try disabling plugins individually before messing with the advanced options, personally.

Turning off plugins didn’t seem to do the trick for me, however, I was finally able to get it to work. I have two different 8gb memory sticks, one of them I haven’t used yet and the other has a few games saved to it. I took the empty memory stick and completely did the whole process over on it and it seems to be working fine! I’m not sure why this worked but I’m glad it did.

      • Glad you were able to get it to work. For reference, can you give us a little bit more information about the two memory sticks? Were they maybe different brands? Anything at all different about them?

      • Kraw

         /  2013/07/13

They’re the same brand. They were part of a 16 Gb set; SanDisk brand. The first time I tried to patch the file (on the stick that already had other data on it) I actually didn’t let the patching program finish so I got an incomplete English patched ISO. After figuring it out I deleted the incomplete ISO and let it run all the way through, doing it correctly that time. Even though it was complete that time, the game started crashing at the spike logo. The fact that it works on the empty memory stick might not have anything to do with the stick itself, but maybe that I did it correctly the first time? It’s very possible that on the stick that already has data, rather than deleting the patch file and starting from there, maybe its necessary to delete the original ISO and start the process all over, and then do it correctly the first time? I could try it out on the first memory stick to see if after doing that if it works on that one as well.

  282. Thanks a bunch!
I’m getting a black screen on both 6.60 PRO B9 and B10 after the “extra cutscene” (the one that happens if you Continue after the Epilogue). The rest of the game played smoothly, and the translation was great! Keep up the good work!

Hi! I have the same problem with the spike logo, and then it freezes (I’m on PPSSPP, emulator). But I noticed that the english patch takes only a few seconds, which I assume is normal. The xdelta doesn’t do anything besides open a command prompt for a brief second, which I also assume is normal. I do not know how to check the hashes, and a little help could be appreciated.

    Reply
    • The patching process should take several minutes, not seconds. Does xdelta output any messages to the command prompt? Have you checked to see if the size of the output file matches the expected size?

See this comment for a list of tools you can use to check the hashes of the ISO.

thank you for the tools, the hashes turned out OK. it says:

( I had to screencap this within a millisecond and type it out because it merely flashes across the screen.)

Hi, first of all I want to say thank you for putting the time and effort into making this translation for everyone. I seem to be running into a problem though and I have no idea what to do. I copied the ISO to the same folder as Danganronpa [EN][v1.0][No Movies].zip http://s877.photobucket.com/user/AWSMBaka/media/it1_zps85c60710.png.html (it looks like that) but when I double click on the apply_patch.bat, this appears http://s877.photobucket.com/user/AWSMBaka/media/it_zps2e4baa33.png.html can someone please help me out? I have no idea what I’m doing wrong

    Reply
    • You put the ISO inside the zip file. You need to extract the zip file to a folder somewhere and put the ISO in that same folder, then run apply_patch.bat

  288. I’m playing this on PPSSPP (v0.8.1-549-g8eab028 64-bit build), with these settings: http://pastebin.com/LKPJ26m1. My graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti.

I’ve had no problem with the gameplay since I changed “FramebuffersToMem” to “True”, but there is still one problem remaining: the movie clips have no audio.
The audio seems to work perfectly fine anywhere else (at least so far, I’ve just finished the first class trial) but the pre-rendered movies are just silent.
So I would love to hear if there’s a solution to this, thanks in advance!

    • Did you download and install the ATRAC3+ codec? That should (hopefully) fix the problem

      Reply
      • I googled “ATRAC3+ codec” and found this tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UEYAwOJH44k
So now I’ve installed it and restarted my computer, but the audio is still missing. Do I need to do something with the PPSSPP too (like enable the codec) or have I simply installed the wrong version or something?

      • Hmm. When you first start up the emulator, it should give you the option of downloading the codec – otherwise, go to Settings, Audio, and then hit Download Atrac3+ plugin (or simply enable it if you already have it installed) and you should be good to go.

      • Ah, I’ve seem to have missed that option.
Well, I enabled it and it seems to work (I’ve tested it out on the first movie you get when you start a new game), thank you so much for the help!

Running Windows 7, AMD Radeon HD 6320 Graphics, PPSSPP v0.8.1-549-g8eab028 with FramebuffersToMem = True / FramebuffersCPUconvert = True.

Just finished Chapter 1. When I try to go to the second floor for the first time, the screen goes black. I can open the electroiD, but if I close it, the screen is either black, or I can see the hallway but the visual won’t change if I try to do anything. It seems that dialogue progresses if I press buttons (according to the backlog), but saving/loading states, etc fixes nothing.

  314. For those of you having problems with a dialogue lag(AKA occasional freezing every ten or 15 lines) in JPSP I have a temporary solution. In the game go to the options menu. Turn the voice volume down fully. With this the freezing is gone because it no longer has to go through the trouble of loading voices. However the game will have no voices. Personally I don’t think it’s that much of a sacrifice.

Does ANYONE have a solution for this problem?
My game runs fine on ppsspp and I did everything necessary to fix the item glitch, except i take it i need buffered rendering or Read Framebuffers to Memory to be checked off. Problem is, my game only runs if i set it to Non-buffered Rendering. If i set it to buffered rendering i get a black screen and if i set it to read framebuffers to memory it just crashes.
Does anyone at least know WHY this happens? I’ve been trying to get this game to run for a few days and this is the one thing i need fixed to finally get this to run. I’m about to just crack and just watch a playthrough of this game.

    • You might be better off asking on the PPSSPP forums. I seem to recall hearing about other people having similar problems, but I don’t know exactly what they did to get past them. The PPSSPP folks are going to be better equipped to deal with emulator issues, and if it’s a bug or something, they’re going to be the ones who can fix it.

I’ve successfully downloaded the game, but I’m having problems. It appears that whenever I open the ‘apply_patch.bat’ a black-code screen shows up and upon clicking a button (It said press any key to continue), it disappears and everything stops form there. I am able to turn the Dangan_Ronpa file to an ISO, but unfortunately it wont run without the apply_patch. Am I doing something wrong, is there something broken, or do I just need guidance from someone who has already done this before?

In the text form of the ‘apply_patcher.bat’ (if you right click it and use edit), the first part of it says xdelta3-3.0.6-win32. This happens to also be the name of an application that was also downloaded (When ran it appeared to be the same as the ‘apply_patcher.bat’, but blank). Due to the fact that the xdelta3-3.0.6-win32 application (.exe) is not apart of the setup process that was both given to use in the README document, and shown in the description above, is the application supposed to be combined with the .bat file? (Or am I just spouting out random nonsense)

      • No, the bat file handles running xdelta for you. You don’t need to do anything with that.

For uploading the screenshots, any free image uploading service (such as imgur) will work.

I figured it out. In case anyone has the same problem: You have to put the ISO folder in the main directory, not in the PSP folder. I still felt a little left alone after patching the game, though. Maybe it’s just because I have no insight whatsoever into how this kind of stuff works…

  345. Hopefully someone here might be able to help me out. I bought the Dangan Ronpa Best buy edition from Playasia, with the intention of using this patch. However i can’t even install the data on the psp. The main menu of Dangan Ronpa comes up , but when pressing start, load, Install data it goed back to the main menu. Some side info : I have a Psp slim ( limited final fantasy cc edition ) , firmware 6.60. It might be related to the memory card, there is a 1 GB card installed. Still I’d like to know if there might be other reasons before spending more on expensive Sony memory cards ;)

    Reply
    • You’re not supposed to install it. Follow the instructions here to rip the ISO, which you can then apply the patch to and put on your memory stick. The patched game is 1.24 GB, so it won’t fit on the 1 GB card, but I believe it can be converted to a CSO file which should compress it a decent bit. I have no idea if that’ll make it small enough to fit on your 1 GB stick, and I hear compressing it kills the graphical quality, but it’s an option.

      Reply
      • I’ll try getting a 4GB memory stick this weekend than. The only thing that bothers me is that the game doesn’t start at all, not from uMD disc, not without patching. IT should run in japanese :). Why does it keep sending me back to the start menu? I was thinking this might have something to do with the type of PSP I own. ~~
Anyway. Getting the custom firmware and iso rip doesn’t look that hard, so we’ll see if that works :)

On the PPSSPP the game starts fine and at first it seems ok, the problem occurs in the firs minutes of actual gameplay, after the initial dialogue is done and you wake up in the classroom, there is a tutorial, and then when i am asked to click on highlighted objects is where the bug happens, it simply does not highlight at all, and therefore i cannot select any item on the screen or progress any further in the game.

      • “Load” just means to open the emulator. If you can’t find the “Rendering Mode” section under Options (like this), you probably don’t have a recent enough version. As of this moment, there seem to be a lot of Android-only builds on the page, but if you scroll down a little, you’ll see some with Windows builds, such as v0.8.1-1581-g0d048ed.

Hey, first off I apologize if i’m posting this in the wrong spot.

I am having some problems getting the patch to work with my PSP 3000. When I start the game the PSP logo plays and then it goes to a black screen (the PSP stays on). It does not progress past this.

I have been running 6.60 pro c for awhile now and have had no problems with it. The post-patch game is 1.24 gb and all the hashes line up with the ones listed in the readme. I used both the regular patching approach and used xdeltagui.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

    • You can try disabling any plugins you have, but we do have a small number of confirmed cases of properly patched ISOs just… not working on certain PSPs, and we’re still not sure what the cause or pattern is. You can also try downgrading, as that seems to have helped some people with other problems on 6.60.

      • I downgraded to 6.39 and the problem persists, I guess I’ll just have to learn Japanese.

      • I beliiieve the new builds of PPSSPP actually have those options in the emulator itself, so there’s no longer any need to edit an ini. Not sure if that’ll fix your crash issue, though. Your best bet is to download one of the newest builds (make sure you scroll down to “Automated PPSSPP builds”) and give that a shot, enabling the two necessary options.

      • Hmm.. have you tried playing it with the Danganronpa fix version of PPSSPP? I fully completed the game using it and encountered little to no problems. Thing is, finding this fix is rather difficult. I don’t even remember where I got it from… I’d upload it for you to download but since it’s not mine, I might get into trouble =/

      • The new, official releases (v0.9.1, etc) have the fixes in them. No need to worry about finding an obscure, unofficial build.

I wanted to make the authors aware of this issue on the PPSSPP issue tracker:

    https://github.com/hrydgard/ppsspp/issues/3151#issuecomment-25310411

PPSSPP users are experiencing text corruption issues that, according to the author of PPSSPP, could be resolved by a small change to the patch. It’d be great if you’d consider releasing an updated patch with this change applied; it’d make the game much more playable for people affected by this bug.
